I believe the term Gibson is looking for is “poetic”, or maybe “bookends”. However, what’s ironic (specifically “dramatic irony”) is he left a lethal weapon in Alice’s back and traded it for a gun he doesn’t know is out of bullets. It’s even sweeter since he got the gun from her back.

I’m not entirely sure of that, but Gibson appears to have interrupted Alice reloading back in #734. It’s possible some action happened outside of the frames, but if not then that gun’s either empty or has a single bullet in it (instead of 4) if Alice snapped it in before aiming at Gibson.
At first when I read “you’re going back to the Ochre” i thought he was dropping her off to convalesce with medical attention. Clearly, i am a sentimental fool.

So, telling her “We can rig my belt to hold that yoke in place and get out of here” was too many honest words for Gibson to say in sequence?
He could at least have had the decency to finish her.
